Protestors crash Zoom lecture at NYC public college, unleash antisemitic rhetoric on participants
“The Holocaust has been used as a tool. The fear of antisemitism as the fear of ‘this could happen again’ is being used pre-emptively to oppress and kill others.”
On May 20, during a 9am Zoom class put on by Hunter College in Manhattan, activists joined the call and changed their names to "Free Palestine: Decolonize", and put the Palestinian flags as their backgrounds.
Activists took turns speaking, and espousing a manifesto. At the same time, the chat section was also flooded with anti-Israel comments.
The class being given at the time was simply titled "Practice Lab" and, the sessions generally have 20 people or less in them, but since this was the last class, all groups were gathered together, and there were approximately 200 people in the virtual classroom at the time of the incident.
"The Holocaust has been used as a tool. The fear of antisemitism as the fear of ‘this could happen again’ is being used pre-emptively to oppress and kill others," one person commented in the chat.
According to Fox News, an anonymous student who was present and identifies as Jewish said, "They were totally and completely demonizing Israel, and I was so horrified, I was sick to my stomach. I was so taken aback, and to be honest this is the most anti-Semitic I’ve ever seen with my own."
"There was absolutely no room for anyone to talk against what they were saying… There was absolutely no voice for anyone pro-Israel at all."
Simone Gamble, the professor teaching the class also changed her name to that of the protestors.
"The horrifying thing is that there were professors that were expressing their opinions on it. They’re supposed to be the mediators in the discussion, not the ones who are fueling the fire."
