Politicians of all stripes are paying tribute to Nathan Cirillo on the seven year anniversary of his murder at the National War Memorial in Ottawa.
Cirillo, who was 24, was standing guard when he was killed by a gunman who would immediately after drive onto Parliament Hill and exchange gunfire with parliamentary security personnel in the Centre Block, before being killed.
Justin Trudeau stated, "These attacks on our democracy and on our service members sought to create panic, divide Canadians, and weaken our country. Instead, they united us, and strengthened our resolve to counter hate by promoting the values of freedom, diversity, and inclusion that define us as Canadians."
NDP leader Jagmeet Singh wrote on Twitter: "Today marks 7 years since the attack at the National War Memorial & Parliament Hill. On this solemn anniversary, our thoughts are with the family & friends of Corporal Nathan Cirillo & Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, as well as all first responders who put their safety at risk."
Conservative leader Erin O'Toole wrote: "7 years ago this week, terrorist attacks occurred in Quebec and on Parliament Hill costing our @CanadianForces two brave members. Today, our thoughts are with the family & friends of Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent and Corporal Nathan Cirillo. Lest we forget."
