A report to the United Nations from the federally-funded Chinese and Southeast Asian Legal Clinic (funded by Legal Aid Ontario , a publicly funded non-profit) has cited Canada for "anti-China sentiment and white supremacy."
According to the report, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has failed to combat a "surge of hateful violence" that came with the pandemic, according to Blacklock's Reporter.
“In contrast to the image of Canada as multicultural and welcoming, many Canadians have been emboldened to use the pandemic as a license to exhibit hate and racism,” the group wrote in a statement to the United Nations. “Moreover since the outbreak of the pandemic, anti-Asian hate speech has proliferated on social media platforms fueled by right-wing extremists who are using the pandemic as an opportunity to stir up racist ideologies," it continued.
“The collision of conspiracy theories, anti-China sentiment and white supremacy has rendered dangerous results, including the movement of racist theories and messaging from the fringe to the mainstream."
The well-funded group received a federal grant totalling over $300,000 to help combat anti-Asian racism," the Department of Canadian Heritage reports.
“While the Prime Minister has remarked that ‘hate, violence and discrimination have no place in Canada’ and his government stands with ‘Asian-Canadians across the country’, his government has failed to take any concrete steps to address the surge of hateful violence and messaging that has arisen during the pandemic,” the report continued.
“Most police services cannot accurately discern whether there have been increases in anti-Asian attacks amid the coronavirus pandemic,” the group said. “The gap in information is a barrier.”
