Trudeau's Department of Employment happily paid $500 million in pandemic benefits to people who did not qualify.
A senior civil servant, Graham Flack, told a House of Commons committee that "from the very beginning of the design we made ministers aware," according to Blacklock's Reporter.
"We knew when we were launching," continued Flack. This makes clear that the Trudeau government didn't much mind who received benefits.
In March of last year, the Trudeau government introduced CERB. Trudeau told Canadians that he focused on speed rather than accuracy, meaning an unfathomable amount of people committed fraud on their applications.
"We needed to help them rapidly and efficiently. That means to get the CERB, people needed to simply fill out an attestation to make commitments that they were in a situation that they deserved to get the CERB," said the prime minister.
"Of course, there’s going to be a few people that misrepresent themselves and try to defraud the situation," he added.
In response to Flack's declaration, one Conservative MP complained that "no one is being held accountable for this half-billion-dollar error."
Originally, CERB was supposed to cost $24 billion. This, however, skyrocketed to a throat-clogging $81.6 billion.
