Trudeau government uncertain of how many prisoners were paroled over coronavirus fears

In reality, the managers have said that the number of released prisoners is unknown.

In a public statement, the Correctional Service said that "Covid-19 and other health-related issues are only one of the many considerations taken into account when releasing offenders into the community."

"We are working to get more and more information but we have to go to every warden of every institution. We are looking at doing that," they added.

On April 20, Blair said that approximately six hundred people would be eligible for parole considerations.

Blair, it turns out, was referring to what the normal rate of parole was when there was no pandemic. As a result of this, it is still unknown to the public how many prisoners have been released.

There are 14,000 federal prisoners in Canada, 291 of which have tested positive for the coronavirus. Only two prisoners have died from the virus.

"In terms of being able to say solely that because of Covid-19, that is the reason an offender was released into the community, it is very difficult because there are just so many reasons," said the Correctional Service.

"We continue to review eligible, non-violent, low-risk inmates, especially those who have underlying medical conditions."
