Trudeau health minister took VIP jet to her home several times, costing taxpayers $112,000
In 2010, Liberal Party members pointed fingers at members of the Conservative Party, namely former Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, for using that exact same model of jet.
Health Minister Patty Hajdu flew thousands of kilometres during weekends on a VIP jet, a spokesperson for the transport department has revealed.
Minister Hajdu flew a Cessna Citiation C550, a luxury jet which Liberals had previously criticized Conservatives for using.
According to flight records, Hajdu flew back and forth from Ottawa to her home in Thunder Bay at the start of work weeks, traveling alone, according to Blacklock's Reporter.
"Following Minister Hajdu’s flights the pilots returned to Ottawa and did not incur any travel or accommodation expenses," the spokesperson said.
The cost of the flights has not yet been made public, though a CBC report had previously found that the average flight costs the Cessna jet roughly $2,000 an hour. With Hajdu flying back and forth four out of six weekends, that would total roughly 56 hours of flying. That would amount to $112,000.
"As the Covid-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on commercial flight availability in Canada, and most importantly to exercise a high degree of caution, Transport Canada’s fleet and pilots have been leveraged as one alternative to private chartered flights to transport ministers of the Crown," said Spokesperson Rivet.
