Trudeau will work with big tech to create app to track Canadians

"We will be able to recommend strongly to Canadians a particular app that will help us manage the spread of COVID-19," said Trudeau.

The government is currently searching for companies who can help them develop this tracing app, although they have already partnered with both Google and Apple.

This tracing app will not be mandatory. Having said that, Trudeau will strongly encourage Canadians to download it so they can trace where potential coronavirus cases exist.

Trudeau is hoping to create a pan-Canadian app, however, the government of Alberta has already developed a tracing app for their citizens, named ABTraceTogether.

If multiple provinces develop their own app, it could lead to inconsistent data, according to the CBC.

"In order for people to move around freely, and start getting back to normal life, we have to improve our ability to quickly pinpoint the virus and isolate it," said Trudeau.

Tracing apps have been used across the world to combat coronavirus and are seen as a highly effective method of slowing the spread of the virus. South Korea's lockdown success, in particular, is widely associated with this app.
