WATCH: President Trump attends US Army-Navy football game, crowd goes wild

As the address announcer intoned: “Ladies and gentlemen, the 45th president of the United States,” the audience of around 9,000 at Michie Stadium erupted in cheers, giving the president a standing ovation. Trump stopped in the Army end zone and waved as the crowd chanted “USA, USA, USA.”

The president, or commander-in-chief, is widely respected by members of the US armed services for scaling back its operations overseas.

Trump arrived before the 3pm kick off and strode into the building that houses all the Army football offices and other facilities. He arrived on the field with the superintendents of the Navy and Army academies, Army General Darryl A. Williams and Navy Vice Admiral Sean Buck. They were joined by Secretary of the Army Ryan D. McCarthy and Secretary of the Navy Kenneth J. Braithwaite.

As the Baltimore Sun notes, “Trump attended Saturday’s 121st Army-Navy game, marking the third straight year he has done so as sitting president. Trump also attended the 2016 Army-Navy game at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore as president-elect.”

The tradition of presidential attendance was first started by Theodore Roosevelt, who attended the game in 1901, and again in 1905.

Located on the West Point campus, the event saw the Army shut out the navy by 15-0 for the first time since 1969.
