‘We can’t be doing this’ nursing home director told Cuomo admin last year
Michael Kraus, the director of the Silver Lakes Specialized Care Center in Staten Island NY, warned Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Mar. 25 of 2020 that it was a bad idea to transfer COVID-positive patients from hospital to nursing homes.
Michael Kraus, the director of the Silver Lakes Specialized Care Center in Staten Island NY, warned Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Mar. 25 of 2020 that it was a bad idea to transfer COVID-positive patients from hospital to nursing homes.
"I said that’s ridiculous. We can’t be doing this. It’s just not right to the residents," said Kraus on Thursday during an interview.
Kraus also mentioned in the interview that the nursing homes were denied PPE: "Because they were guided, they must sell to the hospital first."
"So we were rationed, if we would order a large order, they would maybe give us 20%. And they just said they weren't allowed to sell us more."
According to Fox News, 8,500 people in NY state were originally thought to have died in nursing homes. The number of confirmed deaths is now up to over 15,000.
The Cuomo administration has been accused of initially cooking the books and hiding the true numbers. The FBI and the Brooklyn US Attorney's office have both launched investigations into the alleged misdeeds.
In fact, Cuomo has come under increasing fire recently not just for the nursing home scandal, but also because of multiple allegations of sexual harassment. His book deal has been cancelled, and there are increasing calls for him to resign.
