After slapping comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars, actor Will Smith announced Friday he is resigning from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences.
The Academy had previously announced Wednesday that it was initiating "disciplinary proceedings" against Smith over his violent outburst at the Oscars last Sunday night, where he slapped his fellow actor in a televised moment.

"Change takes time and I am committed to doing the work to ensure that I never again allow violence to overtake reason," Smith's statement continued.
David Rubin, the Academy's president, confirmed that he has received Smith's formal resignation, and that the Academy has accepted it without protest or issue.
On the issue of the disciplinary hearings, Rubin also mentioned that the proceedings will still take place over violations of the Academy's standards of conduct, in advance of the next scheduled board meeting on April 18.
Disciplinary actions included suspension or expulsion, along with "other sanctions permitted by the Bylaws and Standards of Conduct," the organization said.
CNN Entertainment further reports that "By resigning, Smith will no longer be able to vote on Oscar-nominated movies and performances each year. His work, however, will still be eligible for future Oscars consideration and nominations."
