GOP candidate for president and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley (R) appeared to go after former President Donald Trump, saying on Monday that if the charges filed against him by the Department of Justice are true, his conduct was "incredibly reckless" and endangered US national security, in addition to bringing danger for military servicemen.
These comments come after Haley complained of "prosecutorial overreach" and "double standards" in the American justice system just last week, which was ostensibly a reference to the aforementioned Trump case.
“He’s facing this indictment tomorrow,” Martha MacCallum, who was hosting Fox News' The Story, said near the beginning of the segment. “Obviously, these are serious, serious accusations and a situation that he finds himself in. What’s your reaction to what’s going on and what we’re gonna see play out tomorrow? What do you say to voters about how they should look at this?”
In her response, Haley noted that although "the DOJ and FBI have lost all credibility with the American people" and need a "complete overhaul," it "can also be true" that the former president was "incredibly reckless with our national security."
She then seemingly attempted to score points as a victim, adding, "More than that, I’m a military spouse. My husband’s about to deploy this weekend. This puts all of our military men and women in danger if you’re going to talk about what our military is capable of or how we would about invading or doing something with one of our enemies. And if that’s the case, it’s reckless, it’s frustrating, and it causes problems."
Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo echoed similar sentiments, saying on a Fox & Friends discussion on Tuesday that Trump was holding "classified docs" at a time he should not have, and that he "chose not" to return them upon receiving an opportunity to do so.
In spite of relentless attacks against his credibility, Trump has consistently been polling very high in the Republican field, routinely commanding double-digit leads, often over even his top opponents.
