Brinton was charged with felony grand larceny in February 2023 after he allegedly stole Tanzanian designer Asya Khamasin's luggage from the Ronald Reagan National Airport in Arlington, VA. The designer revealed in an X post that she caught Brinton wearing her custom-made clothing in photographs he posted to social media that she had reported missing in 2018.
As part of the plea deal, reached in Arlington General District Court, Brinton has agreed to enter into an adult diversion program and undergo mental-health evaluations, write an apology letter, return the stolen property, and complete 50 hours of community service assisting the elderly, said prosecutors.
On July 6, 2022, Brinton was accused of stealing luggage from the Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada. A federal warrant was issued for his arrest on grand larceny allegations. According to the police, Brinton was observed on surveillance footage evading authorities with a suitcase containing more than $3,500 in jewelry, apparel, and makeup.
According to internal documents obtained by Functional Government Initiative (FGI), Brinton was apprehended in Las Vegas while attempting to steal airport luggage during a taxpayer-funded government business trip. He was scheduled to visit Nevada's DoE national security site.
Brinton was placed on leave by the Biden administration in November 2022 following his arrest for the theft of cargo from a Minneapolis airport. He is reportedly responsible for stealing a woman's Vera Bradley suitcase, which was valued at $2,325 from the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport. Brinton was terminated from the Department of Energy in December 2022.
