Tucker, a Jewish philanthropist and businessman, will be stepping down on December 19, just over 12 months after taking the role.
In the wake of socialist Zohran Mamdani winning New York City’s mayoral election on Tuesday night, NYFD commissioner Robert Tucker, who is Jewish, has handed in his resignation.
The resignation came first thing Wednesday morning, sources told the New York Post, and Tucker, a Jewish philanthropist and businessman, will be stepping down from the role on December 19, just over 12 months after taking the role.
The letter, obtained by the New York Daily News, stated, "Between now and then, I will continue to lead the greatest fire department in the world and will ensure an orderly transition."
A source in the FDNY told the outlet that there have been no talks between Tucker and Mamdani’s team about him staying on as commissioner, and added that Tucker reportedly felt he would not fit with Mamdani and his team.
Tucker was on his way to Israel on Wednesday to visit with the Israel Fire and Rescue Authority, and FDNY officials said he is expected to speak on his resignation when he returns to the US.
Mamdani was declared the winner of the city’s election on Tuesday night, and as of late Wednesday morning, with 98 percent of the vote in, Mamdani received 50.6 percent of the vote to Andrew Cuomo’s 41.7 percent, per Decision Desk. Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa received 7.1 percent.
In his victory speech Tuesday night, Mamdani promised a "new age" for New York City that will deliver "relentless improvement." He said, "This new age will be defined by a competence and a compassion that have too long been placed at odds with one another, we will prove that there is no problem too large for government to solve and no concern too small for it to care about."
