"This is absurd – Springfield has swollen by more than a third due to migrants."
According to a press release from Yost's office on Monday, "Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost today directed his office to research legal avenues to stop the federal government from sending an unlimited number of migrants to Ohio communities."
“This is absurd – Springfield has swollen by more than a third due to migrants,” the AG commented about the situation. “How many people can they be expected to take? What are the limits to the federal government’s power? Could the federal government simply funnel into Ohio all the millions of migrants flooding in under the current administration’s watch?”
Yost said, “The problem is not migrants, it is way, way too many migrants in a short period of time. The problem is a massive increase in the population without any communication or assistance from the federal government.”
In July, it was reported by Springfield News-Sun that the influx of around 20,000 Haitian immigrants has brought the town's infrastructure, schools, and other city services to the brink with the amount of strain it has had on the town.
City of Springfield officials have reached out for help from the state and federal government amid the city's strained services. In April, Springfield Mayor Rob Rue as well as two other city officials took a trip to DC in order to meet with the Biden-Harris administration's Department of Homeland Security.
According to the local outlet, the mayor of Springfield, Ohio said that the small city with a population of 58,000 citizens in 2020 has become "saturated” with the number of Haitian immigrants.
The Haitians are coming to the city by way of the Biden-Harris parole program, which includes the entry of migrants from Haiti, Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela to seek entry if they have a US-based sponsor.
The local outlet reported that many of the Haitians going to the town arrive in Mexico and get the CBP One app. This app then allows anyone to make a user profile to make an appointment at the border to claim asylum or gain temporary status. One does not need to have any identifying documentation in order to make a profile on the app. The influx has disrupted the school system as well, with the number of students who are non-English speaking increasing from 250 in 2017 to 1,600, per WHIOTV.
