One California deputy is dead and two others were injured in an incident in Wasco, Calif. on Sunday. The deputies were responding to a report of "shots fired" on Sunday evening when Kern County Deputy Phillip Campas was shot and killed.

The stand-off went on for hours after the 1 pm call alerted authorities to the dangerous, ongoing situation in a home. Campas, a father of two, arrived with others on the scene and encountered gunfire inside a home.

A spokesperson for the Kern County Sheriff's Office, lieutenant Joel Swanson, told reporters that "As deputies were en route there was additional phone calls with subjects shooting in the background and possible subjects down inside the residence," according to the Daily Mail.

As soon as deputies arrived on the scene, a suspect started shooting at them. The deputies, including Campas, locked down the neighborhood and took cover. They also called in a SWAT team, as well as crisis negotiators, to try to get the shooter under control.

These efforts resulted in an hours-long stand off. When the SWAT team tried to enter the home, near 3 pm, they were shot at. Campas was hit along with another officer. Both were transported from the scene to a hospital in Kern, where Campas succumbed to his injuries.

Campas was saluted outside of the medical center in Kern where he died.

It wasn't until almost 6:30 pm when the stand-off had been underway for more than five hours, that officers were able to get a clear shot at the subject, at which point a third officer was shot, suffering non-fatal injuries.

The suspect was taken to the same hospital where his victim, Campas, had died only a few hours before. The Honor Guard, of which Campas was a member, could be seen paying tribute to him as the suspect was brought inside.

Wasco Mayor Alex Garcia issued a statement lamenting Campas' loss.

"While reporting to a standoff here in Wasco, one of our brave Kern County Sheriff Deputies was killed-in-action and another was shot and wounded. Although this remains an ongoing situation, at this time I would like share that my heart goes out to the families of both the deputies," Garcia said.

Investigators said that there may be two others who were shot inside the home where the gunman took aim at Campas and the other officers.
