The Church of God in Aylmer, Ontario will be fined and have its pastor fined as well after defying COVID restrictions.

The church will also have its doors temporarily locked and will face $48,000 in fines and nearly $70,000 in legal costs.

The church was found guilty of contempt after multiple services that had nearly 100 participating. Most if not all participants were maskless and were not social distancing, Global News reports.

Justice Bruce Thomas read his decision on Friday, where he said the church will be made an example out of, in an attempt to detour others from doing the same with their churches.

"This location has been the crucible of the contemptuous activity. This place is part of the fabric of their lives, but these regulations were put in place to protect the community and to save lives," said Thomas.

Church doors will remain locked until provincial restrictions allow for 30 percent capacity in churches.
