In an interview with reporters today, Erin O'Toole justified his decision to kick Senator Denise Batters out of the Conservative caucus.
"It was a necessary decision to make, for the well-being of our caucus, of our Parliament, and of the country," said the Conservative leader.
O'Toole said he wanted to focus on the worsening economic crisis in Canada. Under Trudeau, inflation has reached the highest level since 2003.
Yesterday, Batters was expelled from the conservative caucus for demanding a leadership review of O'Toole. Multiple leading Conservatives expressed frustration over Batters' decision on Twitter, Michelle Rempel Garner said the Liberals were "popping champagne."
Rempel stated that Batters' petition has withdrawn media attention away from Trudeau's failures and placed it once again on meaningless Conservative infighting.
"Prices of basic goods are out of control. We have a major labour AND unemployment crisis. Canada's deficit is out of control. There will always be differences in a party," she added. "We will never overcome the Liberals if we're in open public warfare with each other."
In her petition, Batters said she wants a leadership review to take place within six months. Batters went on to say that O'Toole flip-flopped on issues like gun control.
One lobbyist was shocked by Batters' petition, saying "wow. Trying to think the last time a Senator took an aggressive public stand against their party leader."
Batters was a strong supporter of Peter MacKay during the Conservative leadership election. "I was a proud Peter MacKay delegate at the 2003 federal PC Party convention for his successful leadership bid. Now, I’ve again voted for Peter MacKay as my #1 ballot choice for CPC leadership election," wrote Batters on Twitter.
It is unclear how many Conservative members have signed Batters' petition.
