On Tuesday, Treasury Board President Jean-Yves Duclos and Seniors Minister Deb Schulte announced measures aimed at providing financial assistance to seniors during the COVID-19 crisis.

The Trudeau government will be providing a one-time, tax-free payment of $300 to seniors eligible for Old Age Security, and a further $200 for seniors eligible for the Guaranteed Income Supplement.

"This will help 6.7 million seniors cover increased costs caused by COVID-19," said Schulte, saying that "the 2.2 million seniors eligible for both OAS and GIS will get a total of $500 dollars."

Schulte said the senior aid will total $2.5 billion.

Schulte also announced an additional investment of $20 million in the New Horizons for seniors program, which will help community based projects aimed at reducing isolation and holding up social support networks.

Earlier this month, Trudeau announced that $9 million would be going to aid seniors via programs such as meals on wheels, to ensure that seniors are able to access meals safely.
