Over 45,000 Minnesotans vote 'uncommitted' in Dem primary to protest Biden's support of Israel

The results reflect a similar situation that occurred in Michigan in February, which saw over 100,000 Democrat voters casting their ballot "uncommitted" against Biden.

Joe Biden was declared the winner of Minnesota’s Super Tuesday primary on Tuesday evening, but the "uncommitted" vote was the second-highest chosen option in the state.

With 98 percent of the vote counted by late Wednesday morning, Joe Biden had brought in over 171,000 votes, or 70.7 percent. "Uncommitted" brought in over 45,000 votes, or 18.9 percent, according to the Associated Press.

The results reflect a similar situation that occurred in Michigan in February, which saw over 100,000 Democrat voters casting their ballot against Biden.

A coalition of Muslim voters and progressive Democrats made a last-minute campaign to vote uncommitted in protest of Biden’s stance on Israel.

"Our goal is to get the president’s attention, and we are doing that," Asma Mohammad, an organizer of the effort, said at a watch party in Minneapolis, according to the New York Times.

Chants of "Free Palestine" broke out as the number of uncommitted votes grew throughout the evening.

Lauren Hitt, a Biden campaign spokeswoman, said in a statement that "The president believes making your voice heard and participating in our democracy is fundamental to who we are as Americans. He shares the goal for an end to the violence and a just, lasting peace in the Middle East. He’s working tirelessly to that end."

The organizers said that Michigan inspired their efforts, though the Minnesota group had less time and money. The campaign began roughly one week before the Super Tuesday primary in the state, and the campaign spent around $20,000.

Michigan, on the other hand, started spreading its message around three weeks before its primary and spent around $200,000, and also had the endorsements of people like Rep Rashida Tlaib.
