Protests in France against a new "global security" law that prohibits certain documentation of police actions have turned violent as protesters and police clash in Paris.

The new bill limits freedom of expression in a number of ways, but the most contested aspect prohibits “disseminating by any means or medium whatsoever ... the image of the face or any other identifying element of an officer ... when engaged in a police operation," if the image could "harm the physical or mental integrity." The offense is punishable by a year in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros ($53,300). Critics claim this poses a grave threat to press freedoms in the country.

Protesters concerned with the possible implications of the law have taken to the streets since its adoption. One video reportedly taken Saturday near the Bastille shows a car that appears to have been lit on fire by protesters.

Other footage shows the dramatic attempt by swaths of police to wrangle unruly protesters amid fires in the city streets.

In another instance, protesters appear to be attacking police attempting to control the crowd.
