"This is the second time since I put my hand on the Bible to be sworn in as mayor of this city that we have gathered at a hospital emergency room for a shooting of a Philadelphia police officer."
The officer, whose identity has not been released, iwas admitted to the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
At a press conference, Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel explained that the incident took place shortly after 6 am at a residence on Kings Place in the north of the city.
As a 10-person team breached the first door and moved towards the second door, a shot was fired. The bullet struck the officer in question, bouncing off his ballistic vest and into his hand.
He was rushed to nearby Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he is recovering.
According to Bethel, a man has been detained in connection with the shooting.
At the same press conference, Mayor Cherelle Parker pointed out that "it could have been much worse," thanking the hospital staff for ensuring the officer, who is a 33-year veteran of the force, received the care he needed.
"This is the second time since I put my hand on the Bible to be sworn in as mayor of this city that we have gathered at a hospital emergency room for a shooting of a Philadelphia police officer," Parker lamented. "Our police officers are on the front lines of our city, our city, every day and every night, putting their lives on the line to protect and serve us. This is another reminder of the senseless and all-too-present gun violence here in the city of Philadelphia."
She vowed to investigate and work "as a team" to ensure the city is a safe place for all.
As NBC10 reports, the other officer mentioned was shot in the leg during an incident at a corner store on Friday night. He was released from the hospital on Monday.
