Shadow minister and candidate for Conservative party leader Pierre Poilievre issued a statement on Tuesday following Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelinskyy's speech before the Canadian Parliament.

"I was so moved by President @ZelenskyyUa's passionate speech to Parliament today. We need to back up our sympathy for Ukraine with real action as the country fights for its freedom against Russian aggression. Canada must be a leader in the world again," said Poilievre on his Twitter account.

His actual statement started off with:

"Russia's invasion of Ukraine is illegal and immoral. Russian President Vladimir Putin has violated every one of the West's shared democratic principles and the world must respond with strength."

"Rhetoric and virtue signaling are not enough. We must take concrete action to support President Zelensky and the Ukrainian people as they fight for their freedom."

Poilievre then went on to mention how previous Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper was much more proactive in supporting Ukraine and taking actions to that effect.

The statement goes on to read that "Canada must:"

  • Deliver the weapons Ukraine needs
  • Impose sanctions on top Russian officials and entities
  • Impose punishing sectoral sanctions against Russia's main sources of revenue - energy and natural resources
  • Replace Russian gas in Europe by fast-tracking development of Canadian LNG and secure long-term agreements in Europe, and
  • Welcome Ukrainian refugees fleeing the Russian invasion

The statement closes with "Canada must continue to stand with our NATO allies, and use every diplomatic and financial tool available to bring an end to this brutal war."
