A new multinational poll conducted between Friday and Sunday shows that a majority of Canadians believe that NATO should be ready to militarily defend Ukraine from Russian invasion.
The survey was an online one, in which 1515 Canadians and 1022 Americans responded during the three days. It was conducted by Leger.
According to City News Toronto, questions were asked on whether "NATO nations should prepare themselves for military intervention," whether Ukraine should be allowed into NATO, whether economic sanctions should be "more severe," and how long people thought the conflict could last.
Ironically, while 65 percent of those polled mentioned that they thought tougher economic sanctions were in order, fully 62 percent said that the sanctions will only hurt Russian people and won't deter Russian aggression in Ukraine. Only 35 percent said that they thought the sanctions will "cause Russia to back off."
Just under half of those polled thought that a diplomatic way out of this conflict is possible at this time, and 58 percent were in favor of increased military spending in Canada.
People are also very worried about the possibility of a nuclear war, with around half of those polled saying that the Putin administration is capable of using nuclear weapons.
Roughly 3 in four polled also stated that they believed that the conflict has the potential to draw the rest of the world in, resulting in another World War.
