Trans-identified male Michael "Alice" Attwood has been sentenced to 5 years in prison for stabbing his two children in their Grand Prairie, Alberta home in early 2025.

Attwood, 36, had been arrested on February 19, 2025 and charged with aggravated assault for severing the esophagus of his 8-year-old daughter with a knife and giving his seven-year-old son minor injuries. Per Reduxx, Attwood attacked the children while they were in their bedrooms before cleaning off the knife he used and calling 911.

A forensic psychiatrist found no evidence of serious mental illness at the time of the attack, per the Western Standard. Despite there being signs of emotional instability and borderline personality disorder traits, the court found that he understood his actions.

Honorable Justice J. Sihra said, "Although the accused's gender identity may have been an additional source of stress. There is no evidence that it triggered mental health issues so acute as to diminish moral culpability."

The judge also addressed Attwood’s use of marijuana, which was brought up at the trial, and used female pronouns for the man, saying, "While the accused's cannabis use may explain her behaviour, it does not justify it, nor absolve her of responsibility for the choices she made." Sihra added, "The accused chose to use cannabis regularly. The regular use of cannabis despite having the care of the children manifested recklessness on the accused's part."

Attwood posted on social media about the attack, writing in one post, "For obvious reasons I'm going to sit and stay silent on the locally viral rumors going around. I understand people's upset (trust it's not as high as my own) and I'm going to answer for what I did. When I can see the picture more clearly then I will be here to hold myself accountable as well." He added, "It's just...not the right time for that. I need to focus on my mental health and finding the WHY to this happening...which means not being online."

He wrote in another post, "And yes, I stabbed my daughter in the shoulder, and scraped my sons arm. The cause, and they why are the slander I am mentioning here. I definitely had some sort of mental break...that's why I'm in psych."

He reportedly wrote in a message on Discord, "On the psychology ward. I sort of had a break happen. My kids are OK, but I did sort of ... unconsciously stab Mia in the shoulder. I feel terrible. Then I had this feeling in emergency tonight that a ritual was taking place and people didn't even know it ... but I watched the whole thing unfold. I even saw an Indigenous queen. She was so regal. (Literal old lady with her son walking around.) All in my head of course, but it did ... kind of make me feel better about the whole thing."

Attwood’s family had petitioned for the court to hold him in a psychiatric facility prior to the trial, however, he was released from the ward on February 25, 2025.
