The toddler escaped with only a small bite on his stomach.
Two-year-old CJ Wright-Haywood escaped with only a small bite on his stomach after his mother, Chante, sprung into action and separated him from the animal.
According to WKRG, Wright-Haywood and her son left the house and headed toward their vehicle as per usual. As she went to put something in the trunk, she heard a scream as the dog came bounding up to CJ and knocked him to the ground.
Bag in hand, Wright-Haywood began kicking the animal in an attempt to free her son. When it finally let go, she picked him up and ran back inside, however, it followed right behind.
Doorbell camera footage of the incident showed the dog breaking a flower pot and jumping on the mother and child as they headed toward the front door, and eventually got inside safely. Even after they were out of reach, it continued its attack.
"You can hear like that snapping, trying to get to [my son]," Wright-Haywood told WKRG. "My daughter was able to open the door, and I just kind of pushed him in."
She explained that the dog was "trying to get into the house" and "actually broke the door hinges off of the frame," adding that her and the kids "were putting all our body weight on the door to hold the door close to keep the dog out while I'm calling police and EMS to come."
"I really just wanted people to take responsibility for their animals," Wright-Haywood said, noting that a growing number of dogs were simply being left in the neighborhood by owners who no longer wanted them.
The pit bull in question was taken into custody by Animal Control, however it has not been revealed who its owner was.
