Poilevre said children “are afraid to go to school because of the explosion of homelessness and drug abuse on the streets of Montreal. The situation is completely unacceptable.”
The Maison Benoit Labre has been operating since April but not without widespread local outrage over the drug use outside of the site, drug paraphernalia on the streets, as well as violence and nudity from clients. It has temporarily shut down because of a lack of staff.
“After nine years of the Liberal government, Quebecers no longer feel safe. In fact, while the number of crimes in Montreal rose by 11.5 percent in 2023, compared to the previous year, two out of three Montrealers now believe that their city is less safe than it was five years ago. The situation is similar in Quebec City where violent crime has risen by 42.8 percent since Justin Trudeau came to power,” Poilievere wrote in a June 4, 2024 letter.
“The rise in violent crime is a direct consequence of your government's disastrous and dangerous policies supported by the block, which have increased feelings of insecurity and homelessness throughout Quebec,” Poilievre claimed.
"Mr. Holland, under section 56.1 of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, you have the power to accept or refuse a supervised consumption site. Therefore, to ensure the safety of Quebecers and their children, you must immediately refuse or revoke the exemption granted by your government to the supervised injection site in Montreal, allowing it to operate in close proximity to an elementary school and a daycare centre," Poilievre wrote.
The Conservative leader wrote that his office had recently been informed that children at the daycare “now need a police escort” when leaving the facility.
Poilevre said children “are afraid to go to school because of the explosion of homelessness and drug abuse on the streets of Montreal. The situation is completely unacceptable.”
