Pierre Poilievre called out Liberal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault for saying it was a "difficult decision" to green-light Bay du Nord.

On Wednesday, Liberal Environment Minister Stevn Guilbeault approved the Bay du Nord oil project.

Despite the fact that it is subject to the most stringent emissions rules to date, Guilbeault said giving the green light was a "difficult decision."

"I would be lying to you if I told you that it was not a difficult decision for me," Guilbeault said in French during an interview on TVA Nouvelles, calling it "one of the most difficult that [he] had to make."

Conservative MP Pierre Poilievre responded to Guilbeault's assertion via Twitter.

"Trudeau's minister thinks he has made a difficult decision with the Bay du Nord project," wrote Poilievre, also in French. "There is nothing difficult here. This project will create hundreds of good jobs for Canadians, while producing more of our energy instead of that of the dictators."

Guilbeault has been criticized by environmentalists as well, who say, despite the copious amount of regulations in place, that the project poses too much of a risk.

In his interview with TVA Nouvelles, the former environmental activist turned politician admitted that oil is still necessary in today's world.

"We are going to go from a world that consumes 100 million barrels of oil a day to a world that consumes 30 million a day," he said. "It's a significant reduction, but there will be oil left, even in that world. Might as well to use the oil that has the least impact on the climate."
