In an opinion piece for Politico, Juleanna Glover makes the case that comedian Jon Stewart should run for president in 2024.
Glover writes that if Joe Biden doesn't run for re-election in the next presidential race then "Jon Stewart should run on the Democratic ticket instead. Yes, that’s right: Jon Stewart."
Glover touts Stewart's positions on climate change, abortion, and race as all advantages for him if he were to run.
In March, Stewart said, "America has always prioritized white comfort over black survival" as part of a pro-reparations argument in an episode of his AppleTV show "The Problem with Jon Stewart."
"So he’s clearly engaged enough for the job," Glover states. She then describes his "superpower" as "his internationally renowned sense of humor, and his ability to create a sense of direct connection with the people he’s talking to. It’s the shared sense of collective outrage among the non-insurrectionist-supporting America."
Stewart is currently connected with people through his new woke show, which lost 80 percent of viewers after the first episode.
Glover's argument for Stewart's run centers on the theory that "the 2024 presidential race is guaranteed to be a carnival" and "perhaps the most important reason for the Democrats to consider Stewart is who he’d be running against."
The piece spends little time discarding former President Donald Trump, Florida Governor Ron Desantis, and former Vice President Mike Pence to state that "the most popular, and most dangerous Republican candidate would be Tucker Carlson."
Glover writes that "Carlson’s bloviating fetishization of nationalist and autocratic tendencies seems like a boil that Stewart’s comic umbrage could most effectively lance."
Stewart was asked about running for office in a recent appearance on the podcast "Sway" with New York Times columnist Kara Swisher. Stewart said, "Oh, God. How do you not?" and told listeners it was an option he felt compelled to explore.
At this years 23rd annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, in which Jon Stewart was award recipient, several celebrities like Pete Davidson and Steve Colbert said Stewart should run for office. Dave Chappelle said, "I wish that you would run for president, but I imagine that would be hard for a coke guy to do."
