The poll also found that two thirds of Canadians support maintaining current lockdown measures until at least half of the population is immunized.

A new poll from Leger shows that the majority of Canadians believe that the government will fulfill its promise to have vaccines available for every Canadian who wants one by September.

56 percent of survey respondents believed that the government will have enough vaccines available for the entire population by September.

Canadians were most confident in the federal government's vaccination efforts in British Columbia, Quebec, and the Maritimes. Residents of Ontario and the prairie provinces were more skeptical, with Albertans being the least likely to have confidence in the government's vaccine rollout.

The numbers are fairly different from just a few weeks ago when more Canadians were skeptical of the federal government's vaccine rollout capabilities. However, a surge in vaccine shipments has raised the confidence of Canadians as Canada receives more doses of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines and the AstraZeneca vaccine's approval for use.

"There’s been a bit of a change over the past couple of weeks," said Leger executive vice-president Christian Bourque. "All of these elements together have actually had some positive influence on Canadians’ confidence that we will get vaccinated before the deadline that the federal government set for itself."

However, controversy is now surrounding the AstraZeneca vaccine after numerous health authorities in both Canada and abroad have suggested that there is no evidence of its effectiveness on senior citizens, the age group most vulnerable to coronavirus.

Conservative MP Michelle Rempel Garner blasted the government for sending unclear signals concerning the AstraZeneca vaccine. While the National Advisory Committee on Immunization has recommended against using the AstraZeneca vaccine on seniors, Health Canada continues to approve of such use.

Rempel demanded that the government explain why such recommendations from Health Canada are still being issued, and theorized that such mixed messaging could turn some seniors citizens away from getting vaccinated.

The poll also found that two thirds of Canadians support maintaining current lockdown measures until at least half of the population is immunized against the virus.

"Basically, there's no rush," said Bourque in reference to lifting lockdown measures.

This web survey was conducted from February 26, 2021 to February 28, 2021 with 1,532 Canadians, 18 years of age or older, randomly recruited from LEO’s online panel. For comparison, a probability sample of 1,532 respondents would have a margin of error of ±2.50%, 19 times out of 20, while a probability sample of 1,002 would have a margin of error of ±3.09%, 19 times out of 20.
