A new national poll shows that many Canadians are willing to allow for unconstitutional abuses of civil liberties, as long as it's justified by the pandemic.
The National Omnibus Study of February 2021 was conducted with an online sample of 2413 respondents, all of whom are adults and eligible to vote in Canada at this time.
The study is weighted by age, gender and region as per Statistics Canada's data and is considered to have a margin of error or plus or minus two percent.
Among Tory and NDP voters, 47 and 46 percent of those asked said respectively that they would be "strongly opposed" to police entering people's homes without needing a warrant, if it were to enforce pandemic rules. This number among Liberal voters dropped sharply to a mere 29 percent.
Perhaps even more shockingly, Canadians overwhelmingly supported censorship if it had to do with the novel coronavirus. Fifty-nine percent of all surveyed and 71 percent of Liberal voters support questioning "the existence or seriousness of COVID" being illegal.
A further 52 percent support vehicle checkpoints in order to ensure people are complying with regulations, while 46 percent of Canadians surveyed supported pedestrian checkpoints as well.
Thirty-seven percent of Canadians support the government using technology such as GPS to track people in order to see if they are complying with quarantine measures or not.
And finally, 36 percent of Liberal voters surveyed, along with 25 percent of Conservatives and 21 percent of NDP voters, were OK with the police breaking up families if it were considered to be a public health issue.
