Day wrote, “It is paramount to recognize the fear and uncertainty this creates in our immigrant communities. I want everyone to feel safe and protected, which is why it is important to understand that the Portland Police Bureau does not engage in immigration enforcement.”
Day also runs a business that does DEI consulting.
Newsweek reported on Sunday that an illegal immigrant near Portland was encountered and detained during a DEA investigation. No other reports of ICE activity have been made public yet.
Day continued, “I take great pride in PPB’s community engagement and continuous efforts over the years. We have long-standing relationships within the immigrant communities and Portland-based organizations that advocate and serve these families. In addition, members of the Police Bureau are continuing outreach efforts to build relationships, especially in communities that may be distrustful of police.”
Portland Mayor Keith Wilson and Oregon Governor Tina Kotek recently reiterated the city and state’s commitment to sanctuary status.
Last week, the Department of Justice ordered federal prosecutors to investigate state or local officials who they believe are interfering with the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration.
