Doug Ford makes social distancing exception for his family on Mother's Day

As Ontarians wait to see how the government is going to respond to the province's lowest daily increase in coronavirus cases in nearly two months, Doug Ford has went against his own social distancing mandates, and it has not gone unnoticed.

Reporter Mike Crawley tweeted, saying, "Premier Ford says his 2 daughters who don't live in his house came there yesterday (Mother's Day), joining his other 2 daughters who live with him and his wife. The government's own messaging has been to avoid non-essential travel, and that households should not mix."

This comes as social distancing provisions in Ontario ask citizens to remain at least two meters away from anyone who is not living in the same household.

But Ontarians cannot expect to follow mandates when members of their own government cannot even uphold them.

When asked for clarification on the visit from his children on Mother's Day, Ford's press secretary gave a non-answer: ""We continue to rely on Ontarians to use their best judgement when interacting with individuals from outside their household."

The press secretary's comments run counter to what Ontario's emergency legislation says.

Today, Ford said that visits should be kept to immediate family, but urged people to use "best judgment" when it came to seniors or parents.

"People are the best when it comes to their own judgement and the health and well-being of their own family," said Ford.

Ford said that a state of emergency would have to remain in place until there was a downward trend for two consecutive weeks.
