Principal back to work at Washington high school after 'stepping away' for mocking Charlie Kirk assassination

“Thoughts and prayers. Too bad gun control would have been far, far more effective (he’d still be alive). Maybe thoughts and prayers will work…oops – nope.”

Parents in the Northshore School District in Washington state say they were blindsided this week after spotting Principal Erik McDowell back on campus, just weeks after he announced he was “stepping away” from North Creek High School following public outrage over a social media post mocking the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

Students reported seeing McDowell at the school on Monday, September 29. Alarmed parents quickly contacted both the school and the district seeking clarification about his status.

While Northshore Superintendent Dr. Justin Irish has ignored media inquiries, letters obtained by The Ari Hoffman Show on Talk Radio 570 KVI reveal that the district privately confirmed McDowell’s return to families.

“Mr. McDowell has returned to North Creek High School as of Monday, September 29,” Irish wrote. “As previously shared, he chose to voluntarily step away to reflect and help focus the school on teaching, learning, and most importantly, our students. Due to formal complaints regarding his personal social media post, in alignment with our standard processes, a third-party investigation is underway. This is a personnel matter, so no additional information can or will be shared.”

The district did not specify whether McDowell’s role is temporary, modified, or full reinstatement, leaving many families frustrated and confused.

McDowell drew national attention after posting an Instagram story that read, “Thoughts and prayers. Too bad gun control would have been far, far more effective (he’d still be alive). Maybe thoughts and prayers will work…oops – nope.”

The message, paired with a “Pray for Charlie Kirk” graphic, was posted shortly after Kirk was assassinated during a speaking event in Utah. Parents and community members called for his resignation, saying his comments were inappropriate for someone in a leadership position at a public school.

McDowell issued an apology letter and announced he would step away to “reflect.” But with his quiet return and a third-party investigation still in progress, many parents are questioning whether the district is trying to sweep the controversy under the rug.

Several parents who contacted The Ari Hoffman Show said they learned of McDowell’s return only because their children saw him in the hallways.

The district says a third-party investigation is underway, but it has not disclosed the timeline, scope, or whether McDowell will face any disciplinary action.

For now, McDowell is back on campus, and the community is left wondering whether the district intends to reinstate him permanently or is simply biding time until public pressure fades.

It’s comm7 it’s Washington, so no surprise. They love their degenerates and criminals. Citizens, though… not so much.
