A restaurant in Drummondville, Quebec, which claims to be the "inventor of poutine," has announced that they will be removing the word "poutine" from its menu due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, according to MTL Blog.
The word "poutine" describes not only the iconic dish consisting of french fries topped with cheese curds and lavishly drizzled with gravy, but is the standard French transliteration of Vladimir Putin's surname.
In a now-deleted Facebook post, Le Roy Jucep restaurant said:
"Tonight the Jucep team decided to temporarily remove the word p**tine from its trademark in order to express, in its own way, its profound dismay at the situation in Ukraine."
The post continues: "So, from now on, we are the inventor of Cheese Sauce Fries. Thank you."
After deleting their original Facebook post, a follow-up post from Le Roy Jucep states that "Following telephone threats from people convinced that we are agents of the 'deep state' we have removed the original post. This isn't a marketing operation either, we don't need that to sell poutine..."
