Remains of a newborn were found in Pickering, Ontario on Thursday and the homicide unit has started an investigation, reports CP24.

“The citizen was walking along the shoreline of Lake Ontario here in Pickering when she noticed some remains floating in the water,” said Acting Sgt. George Tudos, of the Durham Regional Police.

First responders were called to the scene close to Frisco road and Montgomery park road at about 3 p.m. after the remains were spotted by a citizen close to the Lake Ontario shoreline.

“Hopefully that will shed some more light for our homicide investigators,” said Tudos. “The investigation will take some time and we are hoping some witnesses will come forward.”

The Post Millennial was in touch with Durham Regional Police who said, "The remains are that of a male newborn baby. Investigators also have concerns for the health and wellbeing of the infant’s mother and are urging her to seek medical assistance and contact police to ensure that she is safe."

Police have closed a section of the waterfront trail close to the shoreline while the investigation ensues.

People with additional information are asked to contact police or anonymously contact Crime Stoppers.
