Rep. Clyburn: Removal of Rep. Cheney from GOP Conference Chair is evidence of 'cancel culture'

"Now they talk a lot about cancel culture. This is the classic cancel culture. They are perpetrating that which they argue that they are against," Clyburn said.

The Republican party's push to remove Representative Liz Cheney from her GOP Conference Chair position is evidence of "cancel culture," said House Majority Whip James Clyburn of South Carolina to CNN's Jake Tapper on Sunday.

"Now they talk a lot about cancel culture. This is the classic cancel culture. They are perpetrating that which they argue that they are against," Clyburn said.

Clyburn told Tapper that diversity in ideas is how the country grows. Destruction comes as a result of wanting everyone to march to the same beat.

"I don’t agree with Liz [Cheney] on much politically but, you know, that’s how we grow as a country. This whole thing that everybody ought to march in lockstep, that is what leads people to destruction. People ought to have a diversity of thought. Diversity is very, very important. You want to limit it to gender and sometimes your race, it is also about thought. And I want to see a strong Republican Party." Clyburn said.

In the same interview, Clyburn placed the blame for the current state of the Republican Party on Mitch McConnell's shoulders.

"I think the Republicans are going to remember that it was Mitch McConnell who told them that his number one priority was to make sure that Barack Obama was a one-term president," Clyburn stated, adding that McConnell failed and Obama was a "successful" two term president. "I think that they’re going to get the same thing here. Mitch McConnell has some personal animus toward Democrats that ought not be. We are ‘one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.’ Let’s operate like that.”

According to Fox News, it is likely that Cheney will be stripped of her GOP leadership position as early as next week, adding that Republicans in her home state of Wyoming are planning to oust her when she's up for re-election next year.
