"How do you think Judgment Day will work for you with so much blood on your hands?"
"Mr. Lyons, do you consider yourself a religious man?" McIver asked. Lyons answered, "Yes ma'am."
"Oh, yes, okay. Well, how do you think Judgment Day will work for you with so much blood on your hands?" she then asked. Lyons said that he would not entertain the question, to which McIver replied again, "Do you think you're going to hell, Mr. Lyons?"
House Homeland Security Committee Chair Andrew Garbarino, a New York Republican, interjected, "The gentlelady will suspend. While vigorous disagreement is part of the legislative process, members are reminded that we must adhere to standards of decorum and debate. The witnesses are here voluntarily, and I will continue to remind members that while oversight is important, aggressively attacking those witnesses personally is inappropriate and not in keeping with the traditions of our committee."
McIver then said she was only "asking a question" of Lyons. Another Democrat also compared ICE to the Ku Klux Klan during the hearing as well as "slave patrols." Other lawmakers also suggested that Lyons had "blood" on his hands at the head of the agency.
McIver has past experience with ICE, as she faces criminal charges that came from a confrontation at a New Jersey ICE facility. She was indicted "forcibly impeding and interfering with federal officers" at the Newark ICE facility in June last year.
