"Her past life includes an 'A' rating from the NRA and denying driver's licenses to illegals."
In the early days of Hochul's political career, she was a moderate to conservative Democrat. Hochul went from being proudly endorsed by the NRA, being tough on illegal immigration, to endorsing socialist Zohran Mamdani in the New York City mayoral race.
Hochul was first appointed to public office in 1994, where she filled a vacancy on the Hamburg Town Board. She was then elected to a full term, with her name on both Democrat and conservative ballot lines.
During her time in local government, she took on the issue of illegal immigration. Her second big political break was also an appointment, this time by then-Governor Eliot Spitzer in 2007. She served as Erie County Clerk and opposed his proposal to allow illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses in New York. At the time, she even threatened that if illegal immigrant drivers would be arrested if they came to her office.
She ran for Congress in 2012 and received an endorsement from the National Rifle Association. She defended her position, saying "I have said all along, as a county clerk, one of my responsibilities was to issue pistol permits, make sure background checks were accomplished. I had relationships with the second amendment community because they were my constituents. And there's a lot of people up here who are sportsmen. People like to target practice and I want to make sure they know they have the right to continue those activities."
In 2021, she ascended to governor after being lieutenant governor to Andrew Cuomo. Cuomo resigned from office after Attorney General Letitia James claimed that he had been a serial sexual harasser. After he stepped down, all charges were dropped.
Hochul nominated a pro-life, pro-business judge to the highest court in New York in one of her first moves as governor.
She then served out Cuomo's term and then ran on her own in 2022 and won the race against Lee Zeldin in a tight race. Hochul will face Congresswoman Elise Stefanik in 2026.
Now, Hochul backs gun control legislation and signed a law allowing illegal immigrants in New York State to obtain drivers licenses.
