Caleb Sharpe, 20, was sentenced to 40 years in prison on Friday for shooting and killing a student and injuring three others at Freeman High School in Rockford, Washington in 2017.
Fox News reports that Ami Strahan, the mother of Sharpe's homicide victim, called the killer an "evil, hateful human being" and asked the judge to sentence him to the longest term possible.
Strahan's son, Sam, was 15-years-old at the time of the shooting and charged Sharpe in an attempt to stop his rampage. Sharpe, who was also 15 at the time, shot the boy twice with an AR-15 causing him to drop to the floor and die.
During the course of the trial, Ami Strahan watched the video of the shooting behind partially covered eyes.
Caleb Sharpe's parents, Ben and Ericka Sharpe, were in the courtroom as the shooter apologized for what he did.
"There’s only really one thing that I can say and that is, I am sorry," Sharpe told the court.
Brooke Foley, Sharpe's public defender, asked Spokane County Superior Court Judge Michael Price for a fixed 20-year sentence.
"His prospects for change and rehabilitation are strong," Foley said.
In her plea, Foley invoked Sharpe's age and said he was immature at the time of the massacre. She cited a Washington state law that says juveniles are not as culpable for their crimes as adults.
Sharpe was sentenced as an adult by Judge Price to 40 years, more than the 35 years recommended by Deputy Prosecutor Sharon Hedlund. Price spoke at length about the brutal slaying but did mention Sharpe did not receive a possible 75 to 90-year sentence because he was a juvenile at the time of the slaughter.
Sharpe has 90 days to appeal.
