Senator calls for resignation of RCMP commissioner after comments on systemic racism

Lucki had previously stated that she acknowledged that she struggled with an exact definition of systemic racism, but would later say that she regrets not saying it outright.

Indigenous Senator Lillian Dyck has called for the resignation of RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki following her comments on systemic racism.

"Commissioner Brenda Lucki’s statements in the last few days reveal that she does not possess the necessary knowledge or skills to remain as the RCMP Commissioner. She should step down or be removed immediately. This will benefit all Canadians, including the members of the RCMP," said Dyck in a statement to CTV News.

Lucki had previously stated that she acknowledged that she struggled with an exact definition of systemic racism, but would later say that she regrets not saying it outright.

"I did acknowledge that we, like others, have racism in our organization, but I did not say definitively that systemic racism exists in the RCMP. I should have," said Lucki.

Her comment, though, was not sufficient enough for Dyck, who called the statement "unacceptable," saying that Lucki did not have the skillset to dismantle systemic racism in the RCMP.

"Commissioner Brenda Lucki should resign or be removed immediately, so that Canadians can get the best possible RCMP Commissioner who is capable of doing the best work not only in Indigenous communities but in all communities," said Dyck.

Lucki's comments were also taken up by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who said: "Systemic racism is an issue right across the country in all our institutions, including in all our police forces, including in the RCMP."
