“Bragg should have settled the case against Trump, as would have been the normal procedure. But he made a political decision."

Senator Mitt Romney has accused Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg of committing "political malpractice" in his pursuit of criminal charges against former President Donald Trump.

Romney's comments were made during an interview with his biographer and Atlantic writer McKay Coppins.

“Bragg should have settled the case against Trump, as would have been the normal procedure. But he made a political decision,” Romney said to his biographer and Atlantic writer McKay Coppins.

“Bragg may have won the battle, for now, but he may have lost the political war,” Romney added. “Democrats think they can put out the Trump fire with oxygen. It’s political malpractice,” the Utah senator added.

Romney also expressed his opinion last month that President Biden should have pardoned Trump once the federal indictments were issued, according to Fox News

"You may disagree with this, but had I been President Biden, when the Justice Department brought on indictments, I would have immediately pardoned him,” Romney explained at the time. “Because it makes me, President Biden, the big guy and the person [who] pardoned a little guy.”

A longtime critic of Trump, Romney has consistently opposed him, having supported both impeachments against the then-president in 2020 and 2021. His comments come at a time when even a number of those who have been critical of Trump have taken pause in his conviction in the NYC trial.

Trump was charged on Thursday by a Manhattan jury for 34 criminal charges relating to falsifying business records. The Biden administration has repeatedly claimed that the trial was not a political weaponization of the justice system.
