One man is dead, and another is in custody after police responded to a shooting in Seattle’s University District Monday evening.

According to the Seattle Police Department, shortly before 5:00 pm, police responded to a 911 call of a male who had been shot around an apartment complex located at 4750 15th Ave North, just blocks away from the University of Washington.

Officers arrived at an apartment complex and found a deceased male with a gunshot wound.

Police identified a suspect who was taken into custody. SPD did not provide the identities of the suspect or the victim or any circumstances leading up to the shooting.

According to police, the Homicide unit will be leading the investigation.

This marks the 73rd homicide in Seattle this year. Earlier this month, the Emerald City blew past the previous all-time high homicide record of 69 set in 1994.

The jump in homicides and crime followed a massive exodus of 600 police officers from the department since the City Council began defunding the department in 2020. Seattle has been operating below the recommended safe police coverage for a city of its size.

Seattle Police Officer Guild president Mike Solan previously told The Ari Hoffman Show on Talk Radio 570 KVI that Seattle has seen more homicides than hired officers.
