Aundre Matthews is accused of killing fellow student Andrew Meismer on Wednesday after a confrontation that began during a science class.
An 18-year-old Texas high school student has been charged with murder after the fatal stabbing of a classmate with a pair of scissors during an argument over a vape pen. According to prosecutors, Audre Matthews believed his $21 vape pen was missing and suspected Andrew Meismer had taken it.
Matthews is accused of killing fellow student Meismer on Wednesday after a confrontation that began during a science class at Sterling High School in Baytown. Now Meismer is dead.
Both students were excused to use the bathroom, where they reportedly fought over the vape. During the altercation, Matthews went through Meismer’s pockets but did not find it. Instead, he found a pair of scissors.
The students returned to the science classroom, where a teacher responded after hearing another student yell for help. The teacher saw Matthews holding Meismer in a chokehold and attempted to intervene. It was then discovered that Meismer had been stabbed multiple times with the scissors.
Meismer was airlifted to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
During a court appearance on Friday, prosecutors said Matthews admitted to taking the scissors and stabbing Meismer multiple times, including in the eye.
According to ABC13, students at the school said Matthews had a lengthy disciplinary history and repeated instances of violent behavior, yet was repeatedly allowed to return to campus. Former teacher Kim Luckett, who previously taught Meismer, told the outlet she had warned district officials last year.
"I went and had a meeting with [the superintendent's] secretary and said things are out of control," Luckett said. "Mark my word, if we do not get a handle on it as admin, somebody is going to die."
Goose Creek ISD confirmed Matthews’ arrest and murder charge but declined to comment further. Matthews is scheduled to appear in court in January.
