The losing streak, the longest in franchise history, was extended to 12 games after a 5-3 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night, after the Mets blew a three-run lead.
The streak began one game before Mamdani visited Citi Field and hugged Mr. and Mrs. Met, the team mascots. The moment prompted the New York Post to dub the skid the “Curse of the Mambino,” a play on the “Curse of the Bambino,” the 86-year championship drought that began when the Boston Red Sox traded Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees.
The "curse" has gotten so bad that Mets announcers even performed a seance before Tuesday's game to try and lift it.
The Mets’ record has been abysmal since last season. In 2025, despite carrying the biggest payroll in baseball at $323 million, the team experienced a dramatic collapse after its June 13 Pride Night, when the Pride flag was shown on the screen at Citi Field instead of the American flag during the National Anthem. The Mets went from the best record in baseball at 45-24 to 38-55 for the rest of the season, missing the playoffs.
The Mets’ troubles have extended off the field as well. As the losing streak continued, fans desperate for someone to blame beyond the players turned their attention to coaching, ownership, and even the promotions department.
According to the JTA, social media posts called out the Mets for not hosting a Jewish Heritage Night when they recently announced the full schedule of upcoming themed nights. The last time the New York Mets held a Jewish Heritage Day at Citi Field was in September 2023, before the October 7 massacre. Some online pundits claimed the omission was an attempt to avoid antisemitic backlash that has surged in the wake of the attacks.
In 2024, the team announced it was axing many of its individual heritage nights and replacing them with a multi-day cultural program called “A Celebration of Queens Culture,” designed to be more broadly inclusive.
“Based on feedback from the community, the Mets are evolving their approach to recognize even more cultures this season,” the Mets said in a statement at the time. “In the borough of Queens, more than 100 cultures are represented and while it’d be impossible to highlight all of them on individual nights, ‘A Celebration of Queens Culture’ will allow the organization to share a taste of everything over a multi-day experience for fans and communities.”
The announcement followed complaints from the Italian-American Baseball Foundation about the Mets’ failure to schedule an Italian Heritage Night during the 2023 season. The Mets did add back some themed nights this year, including celebrations honoring Italian heritage, first responders, Japanese heritage, Dominican heritage, and the LGBTQ community.
Fans’ complaints also spilled into politics. Last season, Mets announcer Gary Cohen was slammed on social media after criticizing Chicago Cubs second baseman Matt Shaw for attending the funeral of TPUSA founder Charlie Kirk after his assassination.
New York sports radio host Mike Francesa claimed the Mets traded outfielder Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers after he was spotted with Ivanka Trump and her family at a Mets game. Francesa said on his show that friction between Nimmo and shortstop Francisco Lindor stemmed from “one side liking Trump.”
“The Nimmo-Lindor thing, my understanding, was political, had to do with Trump,” Francesa said. “One side liked Trump, one side didn’t like Trump.” He added, “So, Trump splitting up between Nimmo and Lindor. That’s my understanding. It started over Trump... As crazy as that sounds, crazier things have happened.”
His wife, Katia Reguero Lindor, then joined Zohran Mamdani’s inaugural committee after the socialist was elected.
After a video surfaced of Mr. and Mrs. Met hugging Mamdani, New York radio host Sid Rosenberg announced he was dumping the Mets for the New York Yankees. “I’ll be 59 on Sunday. For the first time ever I’m sporting a Yankee jersey as I make my way to the Bronx,” Rosenberg wrote on X. “The official transition from a lifelong Met fan to a Yankee fan is now underway.”
“The Mets allow their announcers to sh*t on the late great Charlie, dealt away players who support Trump and celebrate a shortstop whose wife works with the terrorist sympathizer. Seems like a pretty easy choice to me! Let’s Go Yankees (sorry Dad),” Rosenberg posted to X last week.
He added, “Like my friend (Charles Gasparino) once wrote, ‘Go Woke, Go Broke!’ The Mamdani Mets are too WOKE for me! See ya at the Stadium soon fans!”
In another post, Rosenberg wrote, “You can turn on your President. You can turn on your city. You can turn on your country. You can turn on religion. You can turn on your family,” before adding, “But you can NEVER turn on your sports teams! Now do you realize how STUPID so many of you sound? The Mets STOPPED being fun for me and it had little to do with the final score. I think I’ve made my case. LIFE isn’t one big ‘Field of Dreams’ movie idiots. Not anymore!”
