Amazon reportedly pitched ideas including a female 007 spinoff series for the streaming service that would focus on Miss Moneypenny, MI6 spy chief M’s secretary.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Broccoli, who acquired the rights to the James Bond franchise from her late father Albert “Cubby” Broccoli after he passed, holds all approval rights for the franchise and will not agree to Amazon’s plans for the next film or potential TV series.
Broccoli reportedly said of the Amazon executives, “These people are f*cking idiots.”
Amazon reportedly pitched ideas including a female 007 spinoff series for the streaming service that would focus on Miss Moneypenny, MI6 spy chief M’s secretary, but Broccoli nixed the idea.
However, the friction with Amazon brass has reportedly gotten so bad that Broccoli is threatening to delay the release of a Bond sequel.
Broccoli previously told the Hollywood Reporter in 2021, “I think [the next James Bond] will be a man because I don’t think a woman should play James Bond. I believe in making characters for women and not just having women play men’s roles.”
She added, “I don’t think there are enough great roles for women, and it’s very important to me that we make movies for women about women. He should be British, so British can be any [ethnicity or race].”
Actor Daniel Craig, who retired from the role of Bond following 2021’s No Time To Die, said he doesn’t think Bond should be gender-swapped, rather, a similar franchise with a female lead could be successful. He asked during an interview with Radio Times in 2021, "Why should a woman play James Bond when there should be a part just as good as James Bond, but for a woman?"
There were also reportedly discussions about having someone who is gay or a person of color take on the role of Bond, which Broccoli was open to. She told the Girls On Film podcast in 2021 when asked about Bond being "non-binary" and using they/them pronouns, "Who knows? I mean, I think it's open. We just have to find the right actor."
