Toronto Mayor John Tory issued an apology Sunday night after he received backlash for not social distancing or properly wearing a mask when he visited Trinity Bellwoods Park on Saturday.
He had gone to the park to determine just how much his fellow citizens were not following the social distancing protocols that he was not following.
Tory was up front about his motivations in visiting the heavily populated park on Saturday, saying that he intended to talk with the people there to find out why they were out there when they know the province is locked down due to COVID-19.
But many people took exception to Tory's story, tweeting things like: "Mask down, and not 6 feet. This is the mixed messaging our government is sending young people."
And it was only after he was called out for his contradictory behavior that he decided to issue a short statement, saying, "I fully intended to properly physical distance but it was very difficult to do. I wore a mask into the park but I failed to use it properly, another thing I'm disappointed about."
While Tory was breaking the social distancing protocols and improperly wearing a mask in a heavily populated area, Canadians were being fined up to millions of dollars total for doing the same thing.
It is not known whether Tory would have issued the apology if he had not been caught and dragged on social media for his failure to conform to the same policies he insisted others obey.
