While Tory argues in favour of this system, Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott has vocally insisted that no such system will ever be placed in the province.

Toronto Mayor John Tory is calling for a "provincewide proof-of-vaccination system," similar to what is referred to as a "vaccine passport."

Tory says it is the "best thing we can do right now" to ensure businesses stay open amid a fourth wave, according to CP24.

Various areas of Quebec have already begun implementing vaccine passports, which would be required to enter non-essential businesses and events. While Tory argues in favour of this system, Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott has vocally insisted that no such system will ever be placed in the province.

"Based on the advice I am receiving from medical officials, I believe such a provincial plan is the best thing we can do right now to protect these businesses and other places of work from being closed down again due to a surge," Tory said.

"A provincewide proof of vaccination system will help encourage more people to get vaccinated and will help us continue our progress reopening and recovering from COVID-19."

There is currently no evidence to suggest vaccine passports will lessen the effects of the pandemic. Critics of the system have argued that it is segregationist and infringes on several fundamental Charter rights.
