Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders addressed media on Sunday after photos of a packed Trinity Bellwoods park went viral.

According to Saunders, tickets were issued to many park goers who ignored social distancing, which prohibits groups of larger than five people, CP24 reports.

Saunders also said that park goers were spotted urinating and defecating on nearby properties, driveways, and backyards.

"A lot of complaints were coming in from the residents, people urinating, people defecating on their properties," Saunders said. "When you've got an elderly woman opening the door and seeing someone defecating, it is quite bothersome."

Saunders said police presence at the park would be ramped up to ensure the situation doesn't happen again.

"We want you to enjoy the park but there are boundaries... You can't be cavalier in breaking the law."

"When you don't see the threat, you are less likely to understand the impact you are having. If it were scorpions, they'd be nobody here at the park," Saunders continued. "I'm just hoping that people understand this is about saving lives."

As for Trinity Bellwoods today, the park remains virtually unrecognizable from its form from yesterday, with people responsibly enjoying the weather and adhering to social distancing guidelines.
