Mortellus helps run a witchcraft coven called the "Coven of Leaves."
A trans, non-binary mother who identifies as a "necromancer" as well as a "witch" has been angered that the parent's "non-binary" kids were "outed" by their charter school in North Carolina. The outing of the kids after other parents at the school became concerned over the children's enrollment.
The children of Mortellus, 42, and Joe, had toured Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy in Forest City, North Carolina prior to the children attending the school. Their two 6-year-old twins allegedly identify as "non-binary," according to the Daily Mail.
During the previous visit, Mortellus and Joe wanted to know if the 6-year-olds would have access to gender-neutral bathrooms when they went to the school. The couple claimed that they had been assured by the school that the administration was working on getting gender-neutral bathrooms in the school, but that the school said it had single-stall restrooms in each classroom also.
Mortellus also asked if there were "gender-neutral" uniforms and whether students are "sorted by gender," stating that "one of my twins had been rather fluid with pronouns, flitting back and forth as it pleased them and only recently settling into a preference."
A month or so later, Mortellus discovered that other parents from the school found out that the twins identified as non-binary and had spoken out against the children enrolling at the school. "When I saw it all... I sat there quietly for a moment, feeling like my stomach bottomed out," Mortellus said.
"I felt nauseous. I felt sad. I battled with myself over what the right reaction was... but settled on anger," the mother said. Mortellus said that the school had put the children in danger and did not make Joe or Mortellus aware.
On social media, Mortellus is self-described as a "witch,” "mortician," as well as a "necromancer." Mortellus also helps run a witchcraft coven called the "Coven of Leaves."
An about page reads, "Despite Gardnerian Wicca's reputation for rigidity, Mortellus affirms that The Coven of Leaves is orthopraxic rather than orthodoxic, takes a non-binary approach, and focuses on the practice and ethical use of the Craft itself. Mortellus teaches the mysteries of the Craft in phases, as the knowledge is earned, to be observed at rituals and otherwise appropriated into individual practice."
The Gardnerian tradition, according to the Harvard Pluralism Project, is a "tradition of Wicca, a form of religious witchcraft, follows the writings and teachings of Gerald Gardner (1884–1964), which were published in England in the 1950s." The witchcraft has ties to Paganism.
