Census records from 1950 showed that Rhonda's grandfather is the uncle to the shooter, meaning that they are first cousins once removed.
The revelations were unearthed by the Providence Journal, which showed that the couple were first cousins once removed, which resulted in the two having the same last name prior to them getting married in 1992. Dorgan had purposefully shot his family members at the hockey game that took place on Monday, which killed Rhonda, their son, Aidan, and left Rhonda's parents, Gerald and Linda Dorgan, with critical injuries.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, it had not been clear why Rhonda, as Robert's ex-wife, had the same last name. However, census records from 1950 showed that Rhonda's grandfather is the uncle of the shooter, meaning that they are first cousins once removed.
Rhonda Dorgan divorced Robert Dorgan in 2021, and had cited "gender reassignment surgery, narcissistic + personality disorder traits" as reasons for the split-up. She later crossed that out and wrote, "Irreconcilable differences which have caused the immediate breakdown of the marriage."
Pictures of Dorgan that were posted online showed him walking around in women's clothing at the gym, posing in skimpy outfits in front of his motorcycle, as well as others.
He was also very active on social media, where he would lash out at those who would state that men cannot become women.
In a post the day before the shooting, Dorgan wrote in response to a post on social media that called transgender Delaware Rep. Sarah McBride is a man, “Keep bashing us, but do not wonder why we Go BERSERK.”
